About This Site

Jim Woodhouse has worked in the Cambridge University Engineering Department since 1986. His interests are in the modelling, measurement and prediction of vibration in complex structures, including musical instruments. His interest in the violin started from a hobby interest in building instruments. Full list of publications

This site is an experiment and a work in progress. The intention is to give a multi-level description of the science of musical instruments. The main thread of text is essentially an e-book, intended to be accessible to all readers. But there are many additional links giving optional technical and mathematical detail to those interested. The choice of material is idiosyncratic, based on things I happen to have been involved with over the years. The intention is to add topics progressively and eventually cover most of the subject, but inevitably there will be more detail in areas most familiar to me. This site works best on devices that support multiple tabs: the extra links open in new tabs, so that the reader need not lose their place in the main text.
